T: Look at the blackboard. The topic of our today’s lesson is “Speaking about Famous People”. So today we’ll learn more about famous people of Russia and other countries, watch film, read and translate the text. Are you ready for the lesson?

T: Last time you had a homework to get some interesting information about the cites. What do you know about them?

S: I know that London is the capital of GB. It is 2 thousand years old. And it is famous for Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and so on.

S: Moscow is the capital city of Russia. It is famous for The Kremlin, The Red Square, Tretiakov Gallery.

S: Washington is the capital city of The USA. It is famous for The White House. It is where the president lives and works.

S: Ottawa is the capital of Canada. It is famous for its nickname. It is called the “Tulip City”, because every spring it is filled with thousands of tulips from The Netherlands.

S: Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. It is a big sea port.

S: Sydney isn’t the capital of Australia. It is famous for its Opera House. It is the symbol of all Australia.

T: And what can you say about our region. What is it famous for?

S: The main city of our region is Stavropoulos. Many famous people visited Stavropol. For example Suvorov, Pushkin, Lermontov and others.

T: Well done. Thank you. So we come to the subject of our today’s lesson. Speaking about Famous People. Open your books on page 18-19. Look at the pictures. Do you know these persons?

S: Some of them.

T: So, in order to speak about them let’s study new words. Open your vocabularies and put down the new words from the blackboard then we’ll translate them together.

Look at pages 18-19 and speak about these persons, using new words.

T: Let’s speak about the persons on the pictures.

S: Winston Chirchill – (p 134)

S: Andrei Sakharov – (p 136)

S: Peter I – Russian tsar

S: George Washington – the first president of the USA

S: Indira Gandi – She was the prime minister of India in 1966-1984. She was killed in 1984 and after her death her elder son became the Prime-minister of India.

S: Leonardo Da Vinchi – great painter and inventor

S: William Shakespeare – English writer and actor

S: Princess Diana – the princess of the UK.

T: I’d like to pay your attention on two more persons. Do you know them? They are from Stavropol Region.

S: Pavel Gretchishckin – he is a famous Stavropol region painter. He paints landscapes and such painters are called landscapists. There is a wonderful art gallery in Stavropol in Morozova Street. It is placed in the building of an ancient mosque.

S: Andrei Chemerckin – he is a great sportsman. He is into heavy athletics. He was the winner of the Olympic games in Atlanta in 1996. He set some world records. He is called the strongest man in the world.

T: And the next person is Helen Berezhnaya. She is the figure skating sportsman. She skates with Anton Sikharulidze and some years later they became silver winners of the Olympic games.
