I. Four senior children help with organizing the party. Three of them are "English", and one boy is on the exchange programme in London now. In his host family there are three kids - John, Mary and Linda. They want to show their "Russian guest" (Dima) how they prepare and organize a party for children.

John: We usually start preparing for the party with making the list of necessary things. It looks like this one.

Dima: May I have a look at it?

John: Yes, of course. And if you don't understand anything ask me or my sisters questions. We'll be glad to explain.

Dima: Thank you. I'll be very glad to help you.

John (to Dima): You should blow up the balloons and hang them on the door.

Dima: OK. But why are there so many balloons?

John: Because it's a balloon party. The children will go home with them. We'll write some words on these balloons and give one to every boy and girl.

Dima: What do you usually write on them?

John: We write a name on each balloon and "Thank you for coming to the party". Have a look.

II. Preparation for the party

II.1.Examining the list of necessary things

Ask the children to name all the things on the list. Show the flashcards one by one. Children match the names of the necessary things with the pictures.

II.2. Making invitations cards

Linda: Mary, have you sent the invitation cards?

Mary: Yes, I have done it two days before. And all the guests have sent their messages back and informed that they could come.

Linda: I think our invitation cards look wonderful.

Dima: Did you make invitations cards yourself?

Mary: Yes. And it's a real pleasure to make them. We'll show you how to do it.

Give each child necessary things to prepare an invitation card.

Explain the details. Ask the children to fill in the invitation cards.

II.3. Making decorations (table decorations, paper hats)

Linda: It's time to decorate the table.

Dima: Do you buy any special table decorations?

Mary: No, we always make everything ourselves. Let's put flowers on the table. This is how we'll do it. We'll take this bowl. It is round and not too high. We'll put this special thing into it. Linda: Now let's take these flowers and some small branches. That's fine. Now we can fill the bowl with water and put it on the table.

Dima: Looks very nice indeed.

Ask two children to help with the decoration of the table. Let the rest of them make nice paper hats.

II.4. Making name badges and place-markers

Dima: Mary, what do you want to do next?

Mary: Let's make some name badges.

Dima: How do you make them?

Mary: I cut a piece of card in the form of a balloon and glue a piece of string on it. Then I write the name of the guest on each badge so everybody knows who is who.

Dima: May I help you with the badges?

Mary: You are welcome.

Encourage the children to make name badges and place-markers.

Linda: John, have you made place-markers?

John: Yes. I made them yesterday.

Dima: What is a place-marker and how do you make them?

Linda: I take a piece of card about 10 cm by 10 cm and cut it in the form of a balloon. Then I write the name and fold the card in half so that it can stand up.

We put them on the table in front of the plates. The children will know where to sit.

Linda: Look! Mary has made something special.

Dima: Oh! What is it?

Mary: We call them "apple surprises". I will show you how to make them.

Dima: What is this poster for? What is it?

John: It is a donkey.

Dima: A donkey? But where is its tail?

John: It's for a game "Pin the Tail on the Donkey".

Dima: How do you play it?

John: I'll show you. We put the poster on the wall. Everybody has the chance to pin the tail on the donkey. It is not easy because you can not see. Then we put a scarf over your eyes. The person who puts the tail nearest to the right place is the winner.

Dima: It is fantastic! In Russia our family likes the similar game. But we call it "Pin the Nose to the Snowman" and play it during the New Year's party.

Mary: Is everything ready?

John: I think it is.

Linda: Now it's time to play some nice music and to welcome the guests.

Mary: They are already coming in.

III. The Party

There's a balloon party here today,
There's a balloon party here today,
We can tell it by a lot of balloons
There's a balloon party here today!

1. Sing a song to begin the party

How Do You Do?

How do you do?
How do you do?
I'm very pleased to meet you,
I'm very pleased to meet you,
How do you do.

2. To show children to their places put name badges on the table. To make the procedure funnier sing this very unusual song.

(Say hello to a different child each time. Fit in words naming different animals and describing the sounds they make. Give each child a paper hat with the image of this animal.)

Say Hello

Say hello - Hello
Be a dog - Bow-wow
Be a dog - Bow- wow
I'm a dog - Bow-wow.

3. Play the game "Edible or Inedible" and lay the table.

Show different flashcards, ask the children name the thing and decide if it is edible or not. If it is edible put the similar food on the table.

(You can show pictures of apples, oranges, pears, bananas, cakes, tea, juice, nuts, etc.

Between the songs and games children eat and drink to enjoy themselves.)

4. To cheer up the mood sing another funny song

It is a well-known song When Dinosaur's Feeling Hungry. Instead of a dinosaur, think of another character to sing about. Ask children what they can find in the kitchen which your new character would or wouldn't like to eat. Fit these words into the text to make new verses.

Put some edible things like different pieces of fruit into one bag, and into another bag put some inedible objects - a piece of string, soap, rubber etc. As you sing the song, a child can pick one thing from each bag with which to complete the lines of the verse.

When Pete Is Feeling Hungry

When Pete is feeling hungry
He looks for food.
He looks in the kitchen
When he's in a hungry mood.
When he looks in the kitchen
He finds lots and lots of cake,
When he looks in the kitchen
He finds lots and lots of soap.
And he goes mmm - cake,
And he goes ugh - soap.

5. Play a "Bad Banana" game.

1. Children stand in a circle.

2. They pass the banana from each other saying the following words:

One banana, two bananas,
Three bananas, four.
Five bananas, six bananas,
Seven bananas more.
A bad one!

3. The child who gets a banana with the final words (a "bad"one) must leave the circle.

4. Children start to pass a banana again.

5. The last person who is left is the winner.

6. To involve all the children play the game "Magic Statues"

  1. Choose a leader.
  2. The leader walks around the room with everyone following him/her.
  3. Suddenly the leader turns around and shouts a word.
  4. Everyone must freeze to look like the word.
  5. Everyone follows the leader again (you can change the leader).

A leader can shout out different words indicating animals. For example, a spider, an owl, a frog, a cock, a hamster, a monkey, etc.

7. Teach the children to cook something unusual. Ask them to look at the pictures and then read the instructions. They should match the pictures with the instructions to learn how to make "an apple surprise"

a. Take some apples and wash them carefully.

b. Push an ice-cream stick into each apple.

c. Melt a bar of chocolate in a small bowl.

d. Take a bowl of soft chocolate and put each apple into it.

e. Turn the apple round and round so that there is chocolate all over it.

f. Put some nuts into a plate.

g. Put each apple into the plate with nuts and turn the apple round.

h. Place the "apple surprises" into the refrigerator for some time.

8. Play the game "Pin the Tail on the Donkey".

1. Put the picture of a donkey on the wall.

2. Everybody has the chance to pin the tail on the donkey.

3. Ask the children to take part in turn.

4. Then put a scarf over the child's eyes.

5. Give the child a "tail" and ask him/her to pin this tail on the donkey's body.

5. The person who puts the tail nearest to the right place is the winner.

9. Give each child a balloon with the words "Thank you for coming to the party".

(Children say "thank you" to the hosts and go home.)
