Drawing into the work
Вовлечение в работу над проектом

We began to study the theme “The pleasure of Reading” with discussing habits of our classmates:

  • What do you usually do in your free time?
  • What is your hobby?
  • Do you like reading?
  • How much time do you spend on reading?

Analysis and range of the problems
Анализ и проблематизация

We realized that some schoolchildren like reading and read a lot but a lot of them don’t read at all. We understood that students had to read more often in Russian and in English because they should be more intelligent, well-educated and more intellectual. They mustn’t waste their time.
The best way to do it is reading a good book. (Презентация 1 – 5,6 слайды).

Concept and Purposefulness
Замысел и целеполагание

We decided to learn more about books and authors, about kinds of books, about history of books, libraries, famous Russian and English writers and their works, and about readers.
And find out the answer the question:

  • Is reading important? Why?
  • Is reading exciting? Why?

Arrangement
Организация

We asked the questions (ex. 1, p. 158):

  • What kind of reading do you prefer: do you like reading books? Newspapers? Magazines? What kind of books, newspapers, magazines?
  • When and where do you usually read?
  • Do you read books for your Russian Literature classes or do you do any extra reading?
  • Have you got your favourite books, authors, characters?
  • How old were you when you began reading? Do you remember what book was the first that you read? What book did you especially like when you were a young child? Did your parents or grandparents read to you when you were very young? What do you think of the tradition of reading in the family circle?
  • Do you collect books? How many books do you have at home?
  • How do grown-up books differ from children’s books? Do you read them? Do you parents or teachers help you to choose books that you read?
  • Do you use any libraries? Do you find them helpful? In what way?
  • What does reading do for you? Is it important part of your life? In what way can reading be useful to people?

After that we decided to learn more about our reading habits, go to our school library, try to make up our own stories and learn more about English Literature. All of us were given the task to choose the famous character and find out what he/she was famous for and what he/she taught us.

3. Презентации учащихся. Some of us prepared the presentations which we are discussing.

1) Diana Khanineva “The adventures of Tom Sawyer” (Презентация 2)
2) Maria Tselichsheva “White Fang” (Презентация 3)

– Have you read these books in Russian? In English?
– If no, do you want to read these books?

4. Physical exercises (ex. 73, p. 207):

– There are a lot of kinds of books. We can read, dramatize them, we can compose music, shoot films and cartoons. Now let’s dramatize the English song.

Realization
Реализация

1. We are ready to discuss our explorations.

These are our stories: (Драматизация литературных произведений, выбор костюма для показа персонажа).

Капочкина Анна:

I’d like to tell you about myself. My name is Kiche, White Fang’s mother. I am very proud of my son. First of all I’m a she-wolf. My coat is grey and a little red. I am a large wolf; people say that I am almost 5 feet long. My husband – a wolf has a grey coat too, so we don’t know why our son has white hair. I am kind and cheerful with my children. In battles I am brave.
I am from Jack London’s story “White Fang”. Jack was born on the 12th of January, 1876 in Sant Francisco. He wrote adventure stories and novels. The most famous written by London are “The Sea-Wolf”, “Hearts of Three Persons”, “The Call of the Wild” and many others. The most interesting story is the story of my son. It teaches people how to be brave, honest, developable and friendly. Please, if you haven’t read our story yet, read it now!

Ханинева Диана:

My dear friends, my name is Mermaid. I live in the Sea World. I have six sisters. And they are elder than me.
I am a very beautiful mermaid. My eyes are blue. My hair is long, blond and curly. I have a fish tail, it is long and beautiful. My smile is always on my face, because I am a very cheerful and funny mermaid. And so I can be kind, reliable, honest, bouncy, clever, curious, lonely and polite.
I am from a fairy tale “Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen.
I advice you to read this interesting story and tell it your friends. I think you’ll like it very much.

Диденко Алина:

My name is Snow White. I have this name because my skin is as white as snow. I am very pretty, kind and smart. I live with my mother-in-low, who hates me, but I am very patient and hard-working. The fairy tale “Snow White” tells you a wonderful story about me. One day, my wicked mother-in-low wanted to kill me, but I escaped to the forest and found new friends – seven gnomes (dwarfs). I was very kind to them and they liked me very much. My wicked mother-in-low wanted to kill me but I slept and the kiss of a handsome prince saved me.
This wonderful fairy tale was written by Brothers Grimm and is very popular all over the world. This story teaches us to be hard-working, patient and kind. But, in my opinion, the main idea of this fairy tale is to be kind-hearted and not to be unforgiving to people.

Фелюкова Надя:

My name is Sleeping Beauty. I am fair-haired, my hair is wavy and shoulder-length. My eyebrows are thin, my eyes are big and blue with long eyelashes. My nose is short and pointed and my mouth is small with full lips. As for my teeth, they are white and small. Everybody says that I am beautiful. I am not spiteful and greedy. I have a good sense of humour, well-manned and patient. And I like cooking. I am a hero of a fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty” which was written by a great Russian writer A. S. Pushkin in 1833.

Земцова Юля:

I am Cinderella. Charles Perrault, a French author, wrote about me in the seventeenth century. I am a young beautiful girl. I am slim with straight blond hair and a nice smile. I am the only daughter of a widowed aristocrat. My father thought that I needed a mother’s care and married a proud and mean woman who had two daughters by her first marriage. They were at my age. My stepsisters were envious of my beauty and charm. My Stepmother and her daughters made me wear old baggy clothes and do all the housework. When I had done my work, I sat in the cinder, that’s why people called me “Cinderella”. I worked hard: rose early, before daylight, brought water, made fire, cooked meals and washed clothes. I never complained, was very helpful and reliable.
One day, the Prince invited all the young ladies to a ball because he wanted to choose a lovely wife. My stepsisters were invited and I helped them to plan their clothes dreaming of going to the dance. But it was impossible, so I cried in despair.
My Fairy Godmother magically appeared and helped me. She turned a pumpkin into a coach, mice into horses, a rat into a coachman, and lizards into footmen. Then she turned my rags into a beautiful dress and gave me a pair of glass slippers. The Godmother told me to enjoy the ball, but warned that I had to return before midnight; otherwise, the spells would be broken.
I made a great impression on the Prince and he never left me side. He felt in love with me. Unfortunately, I forgot about the spells and left only at the final stroke of midnight, losing one of my glass slippers on the steps of the palace. The Prince picked up the slipper and decided to find and marry the girl to whom it belonged. And I kept the other slipper waiting for the Prince.
The Prince tried the slipper on all the women in the kingdom. When the Prince arrived at our villa, I tried the slipper on and it fitted me perfectly. I returned to the palace, where I married the Prince and we lived happily together.
The moral of the story is that beauty is a treasure, but graciousness is priceless. Without it, nothing is possible: with it, one can do anything.

Банковская Анастасия:

I would like to tell you about a fairy tale “Red Riding Hood” which has been known in Europe since the fourteenth century. It used to be very popular among common people.
Perrot was the first writer who gave a literary version of this tale. Lately it was edited by Brothers Grimm.
It is a tale about a girl who was sent by her mum to her granny. The girl had to bring some pies to her granny. It was a very pretty girl wearing a red cap. She was a very obedient girl but she didn’t know that it was very dangerous to talk to unknown animals. So it caused a lot of problems.
Thanks to wood-cutters she was not eaten by the evil wolf and her granny was saved us well.
To my mind, this tale teaches us to be careful. If you are not sure what to do, you’d better ask your parents or friends for advice.

Пузырев Иван:

I am Robin Hood. I am from England. I am a young, strong man. I like poor people and help them to give money. I live in the forest with my friends in the fourteenth century. No one can prove from history that such a man as Robin Hood really lived, but there are some ballads. They are “Robin Hood and the Butcher”, “How Robin Hood escaped from Nottingham Castle”, “How Robin Hood saved Will Scarlet”, “Robin Hood and the Golden Arrow”.
Read about me, please!

Крупник Катя:

 My name is Winnie-the-Pooh.
I am a very funny and clever teddy-bear with a lot of friends.
My father is Alexander Milne. He wrote about me to his son. My stories are translated into many languages.
Read about my adventures!

Трапезников Иван:

I am King Arthur. I am from England. I lived in the twelfth century. I am brave, strong and noble. I have many friends – knights. There are a lot of ballads about us. They are “King Uther and Merlin”, “King Uther calls Great Men”, “Arthur becomes King”, “The Sword Excalibur”, “The Black Knight” and others.
Read, please, about me and my friends, if you like adventures, brave people, beautiful ladies.

Фомин Максим:

I am Tom Sawyer from “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain. I have a lot of friends, the close friend is Huckleberry Finn. I am six years old. I am naughty, bright, crafty. I like adventures and don’t like school.

2. Now we imagine how our characters speak, walk, act. What they wear. What they think. And so on.
We think that they can tell us about wonderful countries, famous people who lived exciting lives. With them we can transport into new places and travel all over the world.
Our characters can discuss a lot of problems with each other and act out dialogues:

  • Why do children seldom read books nowadays?
  • Why do they more often play computer games?
  • How can we help them?
  • How can we teach them that reading is important? Exciting?
  • What are their tastes in reading?
  • What are their favourite authors? Why?
  • Is literature the most popular art?
  • What books can we advice to read to children?
  • What role does literature play in people’s lives?

3. Read the text “The Reader of Books” and say what reading books allowed Matilda to do. (ex. 48, p.193).

4. Answer the question:

  • Why is reading important?
  • Why is reading exciting?
