3. Речевая зарядка – 5 мин. –  Now remind me the stages of your project work. What was the first stage? – At our lessons of English we have learnt a lot about   Cambridge University and Moscow State University. Now we know   the history of these universities, how to apply and to get into them, about the students` life and work. But we know nothing about other famous universities. That is why we`ve decided to find information about different universities and to represent it in the way of a project. Then we were divided into groups, chose the way of presentation and started to work.
–  I know that some of you have decided to tell us about the universities you want to apply to. – Yes. Our main idea is not only to give information about world famous universities  but to tell about our local university, which is  very popular in our republic.
– Can you tell me how you worked on your projects? – Yes, we can.
– What an unusual wish to be a wizard!
I suppose we`ll see something interesting in your project! I know that your imagination is unlimited.
– Oh, I guess  we`ll have exiting time  listening to you. So, who will be the first?
Victoria and Kseniya:  We`ve decided to speak about Yale University, the USA and we`ve made a computer presentation of it.
Vlad:  As for me, I would like to study in a School of magic, such as Hogwarts school, for example. That is why I want to tell you about the ways of applying, studying and living there. To do it, I have used the scenes from the film “Harry Potter” and  made a computer presentation.
Max: I would like to study in UCLA. I have found an information about it and I have made a computer presentation.
Maxim: I want to tell you about Ukhta State Technical University. I think a lot of my classmates want to know more about it because they are going to get into it. I`ve made a computer presentation.
Kseniya and Krestina: Our project is about Harvard University. We have a computer presentation.
4. Защита проектов – 32 мин. – Of course, Ksenia and Vika, you may start. – May  we start?
Yale University comprises three major academic components: Yale College (the undergraduate program), the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the professional schools. In addition, Yale encompasses a wide array of centers and programs, libraries, museums, and administrative support offices. Approximately 11,250 students attend Yale.
Yale’s roots can be traced back to the 1640s, when colonial clergymen led an effort to establish a school to preserve the tradition of European liberal education in the New World. In 1718 the school was named “Yale College” in gratitude to the Welsh merchant Elihu Yale, who had donated the proceeds from the sale of nine bales of goods together with 417 books and a portrait of King George I. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries brought the establishment of the graduate and professional schools that would make Yale a true university. The Yale School of Medicine was chartered in 1810, followed by the Divinity School in 1822, the Law School in 1824, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1847, followed by the schools of Art in 1869, Music in 1894, Forestry & Environmental Studies in 1900, Nursing in 1923, Drama in 1955, Architecture in 1972, and Management in 1974.
International students have made their way to Yale since the 1830s. Today, international students make up nearly 9 percent of the undergraduate student body, and 16 percent of all students at the University. The University began admitting women students at the graduate level in 1869, and as undergraduates in 1969.
Yale College was transformed, beginning in the early 1930s, by the establishment of residential colleges. Taking medieval English universities such as Oxford and Cambridge as its model, this distinctive system divides the undergraduate population into twelve separate communities of approximately 450 members each, thereby enabling Yale to offer its students both the intimacy of a small college environment and the vast resources of a major research university. Each college surrounds a courtyard and occupies up to a full city block, providing a congenial community where residents live, eat, socialize, and pursue a variety of academic and extracurricular activities. Each college has a master and dean, as well as a number of resident faculty members known as fellows, and each has its own dining hall, library, seminar rooms, recreation lounges, and other facilities.
Today, Yale has matured into one of the world’s great universities. Its 11,000 students come from all fifty American states and from 108 countries. The 3,200-member faculty is a richly diverse group of men and women who are leaders in their respective fields. The central campus now covers 310 acres (125 hectares) stretching from the School of Nursing in downtown New Haven to tree-shaded residential neighborhoods around the Divinity School. Yale’s 260 buildings include contributions from distinguished architects of every period in its history.
Teaching and research at Yale University are organized through the schools , departments, and programs.
The undergraduate school, Yale College, is the heart of the University. More than 2,000 undergraduate courses in the liberal arts and sciences are offered each year by over sixty-five departments and programs, forming a curriculum of remarkable breadth and depth. The faculty is dedicated to undergraduate teaching, and many of Yale’s most distinguished professors teach introductory-level courses.
To be accepted to study at Yale, interested applicants must apply directly to the school, college, or program where the degree will be awarded: Yale College for undergraduate degrees; the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences for doctoral programs and some master’s degrees; or one of the professional schools.

– Thank you very much! I like you story and your presentation. And now I want to listen to Max. – I would like to study in UCLA. That is why I have found  information about this university.
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is a public research university located in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, USA. It was founded in 1919 as the "Southern Branch" of the University of California and is the second oldest of the ten campuses. UCLA, considered to be one of the flagship institutions of the University of California system, offers over 300 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide range of disciplines and enrolls about 26,000 undergraduate and about 11,000 graduate students from the United States and around the world. Strengths in liberal arts and sciences and research strengths earned it membership in the Association of American Universities. UCLA has consistently been ranked as one of the top universities in the United States, both in public university polls and overall university polls.
There are almost 40,000 students at UCLA, roughly 27,000 undergraduates and 13,000 graduate and professional students. The student body is diverse both in cultural and economic terms. As many as 36% of UCLA undergraduates receive Pell Grants, given to students whose family income is typically less than $50,000 . International students account for 17% of graduate students and 5% of undergraduates. U.S. undergraduate ethnicity includes 4% African American, 15% Hispanic, 33% White and 38% Asian/Pacific Islander.
The campus is a cultural magnet for the entire Southern California region. UCLA Live! performances fill Royce Hall with enthusiastic audiences for music, dance and the spoken word. The Hammer museum is a showplace for emerging artists, with a rich public offering of forums, readings, lectures and family programs. The Film & Television Archive screens new, classic and international films in the Billy Wilder Theater. The Fowler museum explores global arts and cultures, past and present; free programs include Culture Fix and Kids in the Courtyard.

– Thank you, Max. You gave  us a lot of information about UCLA.
– Who is the next? – May I?
– Yes, you may, Vadim. I would like to study in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry or simply Hogwarts. It the magic school from the books about  Harry Potter  by J. K. Rowling. It is a fictional boarding school of magic for witches and wizards. Hogwarts is a secondary boarding school, taking children from ages eleven to eighteen. Education at Hogwarts is not compulsory.
Hogwarts is somewhere in Scotland. The school is invisible for a Muggle (a non-magical person), they don`t know where it is  located. The castle has extensive territory with lawns, the Lake, a large forest (called the Forbidden Forest), several greenhouses and other outbuildings, and a full-size Quidditch pitch. There is also a special place for all the owls. Electricity and electronic devices are not found at Hogwarts.
Admission to Hogwarts is selective. Children who show magical ability will automatically gain a place. A magical quill at Hogwarts detects the birth of magical children and writes their names into a large parchment book, but there is no admission test because "you are either magical or you are not." Every year, a teacher checks this book and sends a letter to the children who are eleven. Acceptance or declination of a place at Hogwarts must be posted by 31 July. The letter also contains a list of supplies like spell books, uniform, and other things which a student will need. Also a student is allowed to bring a cat, a toad, a rat or an owl. The prospective student is expected to buy all the necessary materials, normally from shops in Dragon Alley, a hiding street near Charring Cross Road in London found behind a pub by the name of The Leaky Cauldron.  Students who cannot afford their supplies can receive financial help from the school.
Academic years are separated by holidays of two months in  summer, and each year is divided into three terms with short holidays around Christmas and Easter.
You can get to Hogwarts by the Hogwarts Express that students take at the beginning of each school year. Students go by the train from Platform 9? at King's Cross station in London. The train leaves at 11:00 am and arrives at Hogsmeade Station after midnight.
Hogwarts is divided into four houses, each of them is named in honor of its founder: Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff. The houses compete throughout the school year, by earning and losing points for various events, for the House Cup and the Quidditch Cup.
Each house is under the authority of one of the Hogwarts staff members. The Heads of the houses, as they are called, are in charge of giving their students important information, dealing with matters of severe punishment,  responding to emergencies in their houses, and so on.
Gryffindor values courage, bravery, loyalty, nerve and chivalry. Its mascot is the lion, and its colours are scarlet and gold. The Head of this house is the Transfiguration teacher, Minerva McGonagall
Hufflepuff values hard work, tolerance, loyalty, and fair play. The house mascot is the badger and canary yellow and midnight black are its colours. The Head of this house is the Herbology teacher Pomona Sprout.
Ravenclaw values intelligence, creativity, learning, and wit. The house mascot is an eagle and the house colours are blue and bronze. The head of this house is the Charms professor, Filius Flitwick.
Slytherin house values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness. The house mascot of Slytherin is the snake, and the house colours are green and silver. The Head of House is Severus Snape
In the early day of Hogwarts, the four founders looked for students everywhere to invite them to their Houses. When the founders worried about the future life of their students, Godric Gryffindor took his hat off and they  added knowledge to it, allowing the Sorting Hat to choose the students by judging each student's qualities and placing them in the most appropriate house.
Subjects. There are twelve  teachers (  Professors), each specializing in a single subject. Transfiguration, Defense against the Dark Arts, Charms, Potions, Astronomy, History of Magic, and Herbology are compulsory subjects for the first five years. At the end of their second year, students are required to add at least two optional subjects to their syllabus for the start of the third year. The five choices are Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, Divination, Care of Magical Creatures, and Muggle Studies.
I would choose this university because I would like to become a wizard. Good or evil, I don’t know yet.  And studying at Hogwarts is more interesting then in our boring institutes.

(After the watching of the presentation).
– A very unusual  work! You can struck the audience! You have an unlimited imagination and unusual approach to fulfillment of a task. Good for you!

– Maxim, it`s your turn now. Are you ready? – Yes, I am. I am telling you about our local university which is very popular in our republic. Many our classmates are going to apply it.
Ukhta State Technical University is one of the biggest and promising higher schools of the Komi Republic   and the whole country. It trains engineers for oil, gas and timber industries.
It was founded in 1958 as the Educational Consulting Institution of Moscow Institute of Petrochamical   and Gas Industry. In 1967 it got the status of an institute and was called  Ukhta Industrial Institute. In 1999 it became Ukhta State Technical University.
The head of the  University is the rector. He has 7 prorectors. There are 8 faculties, headed by deans and assistant – deans.
The students of each faculty have a five-year course of studies, except extramural students, who study for 6 years. At the University all students study a lot of subjects and one foreign language. The academic year lasts from September to June and divided into 2 terms. At the end of each term students have to take examinations and tests. At the end of the course of studies students have to compete their thesis.
In general the University occupies 8 large buildings with numerous lecture theatres, classrooms and well-equipped laboratories where students can do their experiments and in this way develop a scientific outlook and initiative. To keep students physically fit there is a large sport complex “ Burevestnik”.  There are also libraries with spacious reading halls where all the necessary books magazines and newspapers are given without charge.
The University`s academic stuff is highly qualified. Many of them are Masters of Science, professors, and specialists in various fields of technology and science. They give lectures, take seminars, and have tutorials with students, examine them and supervise students during  students` research work.
There are several hostels at the University for those students who come from other parts of the republic. The hostels are situated not far from the University.

– Thank you. Your project is very informative. You gave us a lot of interesting facts about USTU.
Kseniya and Krestina, are you ready to tell us about Harvard?
– Yes, we are ready.
Harvard is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States, established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was named after the College’s first benefactor, the young minister John Harvard of Charlestown, who upon his death in 1638 left his library and half his estate to the institution. A statue of John Harvard stands today in front of University Hall in Harvard Yard, and is perhaps the University’s best known landmark.
Harvard University has 12 degree-granting Schools in addition to the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. The University has grown from nine students with a single master to an enrollment of more than 20,000 degree candidates including undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
Harvard is known for global leadership in education, and the Harvard faculty is composed of men and women who are world-class scholars. Faculty members are passionate and curious individuals who continue their own research while teaching at Harvard. They come from across the country and all over the world, bringing with them a diverse wealth of knowledge.
Harvard University has around 20,000 students across the College, graduate, and professional schools located in Cambridge and Boston. When people refer to Harvard students, often they mean the subset of roughly 6,400 students who attend Harvard College. Students arrive every year in late August. The housing system at Harvard is designed to create a full collegiate experience for all four years of undergraduate education. As freshmen, students live in one of the dormitories in Harvard Yard, a prime location, and eat in the historic and picturesque Annenberg dining hall. After their first year at Harvard, students are placed into one of the 12 houses on campus and continue to live there for the remainder of their residential life at Harvard. Over ninety-seven percent of Harvard undergrads choose to live on campus for all four years, creating a strong campus community and undergraduate experience.

– Thank you for your story. It`s a pity, but you have made some grammar mistakes  in your computer presentation. You should be more attentive.
5. Этап рефлексии – 5 мин. – So, we have just finished to listen to you and now I want you to express your own opinion about your mate`s work. Keep in mind the following criteria:
1) how good  the overall presentation was,
2) pictures and photos should be used and they should help to understand the material better,
3) the presentation should be informative enough,
4) an unusual and interesting form of  presentation,
5) grammar or factual mistakes.

Vlad: I like Kristina`s and Kseniya`s project. Their presentation is exiting. They`ve used not only pictures but also the scenes from the very popular film about Harvard. These scenes are the best demonstration of what we were speaking about while we studied the topic. And I like the music they have chosen for presentation .It gives good mood.
Olesya: I also like their presentation, but I want to say some words about Vlad`s project. It is amazing! He used the scenes from the film “Harry Potter” which demonstrated us everything he told about and didn`t use his notes to look in them while speaking. It means that he has learnt everything by heart. Great. He has made some mistakes but corrected them himself. I like it!
Max: I agree with Vlad and Olesya. I also like those projects. But I want to single out Maxim`s project. He has prepared  a very informative presentation about Ukhta State university. Now I know what faculties it has and some other things. He has made some grammar mistake ,but never mind. I like it.
Ira: I like Max`s project about UCLA.  His project is interesting though he has made some mistakes. And I like Kristina`s and Kseniya`s project about Harvard University. These projects give us a lot of facts from the universities themselves and about student`s life there.
– I agree with all the opinions.  As for me, I enjoyed  listening to  your presentations.  The information which was given by you today can be used  next year  when we `ll study this topic with other pupils.
6. Заключительный этап – 1 мин. – I think  I can give  you excellent marks.  Thank you for your work.
You don`t have  homework today.
The lesson is over, you may go.
