Teacher: Good morning, pupils! Today we shall have an unusual lesson. We shall speak about soft drugs. Do you know them? Name them, please.

Pupils: Ecstasy, pot, marijuana, cocaine.

Teacher: Let’s decide if soft drugs should be strictly forbidden or they can be sold freely?

Leader: Dear Ladies and Gentlemen! Dear guests! I’m very glad to meet you at our debates.

Today we shall speak about drugs. You know that the number of drug addicts in Russia is

increasing every year. Despite the ruinous effect of drug usage there are still some young people who think it is possible and desirable to legalize soft drugs. Here are they. (shows to the team “Pro”) (рисунок 1). We will try to persuade them to change their views on the matter. What do you think why do young people start to take drugs?

Pupil 1: I think that curiosity pushes the young people to try drugs first but then they inevitably become the slaves of drugs.

Pupil 2: May be the cause of it lies in some family problems. Parents and their adult children can’t find mutual language. Parents work from morning till night to earn money and they have no time to communicate with their children.

Pupil 3: To my mind it is fashion or a way to kill the time. Many young people try drugs just for company or under pressure of their so-called “friends”.

Dilyara (a member of the team “Con”): Yes, I agree with you. Many young people start to take drugs under pressure of their mates. Teenagers want to try all sorts of options. They want to live now and to live to the maximum.

Razil (a member of the team “Con”): For many of them it means to be cool, they want to get as much pleasure as possible. Some teens take a stimulant to dance all night, other teens make phychedelic drugs or hallucinogens to produce the equivalent of waking dreams, to broaden their mind and to whip up creativeness. Others need a relaxant to ward a stress.

Arthur (a member of the team “Pro”): And what of it? I’m taking Extazy, because I want to be cool. I think soft drugs should be sold freely. Legalizing Pot is better for the society than prohibition.

Elvira (a member of the team “Pro”): I agree with you. Teens can smoke Pot if they wish- it’s our life, we are free to decide and nobody can forbid us to do what we want.

Leader: Now dear audience! Let’s vote if you think that soft drugs can be sold freely give red cards. If you think that all drugs should be strictly forbidden give green cards.

Leader: You can see the result of the voting with your eyes. Drugs should be strictly forbidden.

Dinara (a member of the team “Con”): If we legalize soft drugs it can make the situation with drug abuse worse. All drugs should be strictly forbidden. It’s a crime against future generations to make Pot legally available.

Irene (a member of the team “Pro”): Smoking Pot isn’t dangerous. Hemp is used in medicine. A lot of people use soft drugs without any harm.

Diluara (a member of the team “Con”): You are not right. Smoking grass is as dangerous as drinking it can cause health problems. Drugs destroy their minds, family and friend relationships and kill our youth.

Razil (a member of the team “Con”): It is known that all Pot smokers are potential criminals; Pot pushers make money by involving teens in drug usage and selling Pot in the streets.

Arthur (a member of the team “Pro”): No, no prohibition of drugs is not good. For example we gather in the evenings and what should we do? Smoking grass is a tradition in our hippie company. We are crawling smoking Pot. It’s cool, super!

Dinara (a member of the team “Con”): You must think about your future! Drug addicts are hypocrites because they say it’s possible to give up using drugs whenever they wish. Prohibition is the only way to stop drug abuse.

Leader: Dear audience! What are the symptoms of taking drugs?

Pupil 4: There are no soft drugs it’s a tale for uneducated people! Their harm is proved by medicine, it’s the same as any other drug.

Pupil 5: I’ve read that such people may be either aggressive or joyful without any reason.

Leader: What are the consequences of taking drugs?

Pupil 6: Soft drugs can cause problems as any drugs do. : Soft drugs cause flashbacks, the developing flashback may result in heroine usage which is taken by injections; this can cause such socially dangerous diseases as AIDS.

Pupil 7: Pot smokers often commit suicide. The average length of drug abused person’s life is only 21 years.

Pupil 8: The cure from drug abuse costs 10 thousand dollars. Do you agree to pay such money ?

Pupil 9: We need to help addicts to rebuild their lives. We should build special rehabilitation centers. These people need our help.

Leader: Thank you. Today we have invited an Honourable Doctor of Medicine Professor of Medical Science Mr. Sadykov. You are welcome, Professor! Will you answer the question, please? What are the symptoms of drug abuse?

Professor: The following symptoms may be the signs of trouble: constricted pupils, unusual flare-ups, withdrawal from responsibility, deterioration of physical appearance, unusual borrowings of money, abrupt changes in school attendance, discipline.

Leader: One more question, Professor. What are the results of smoking grass? Many people think that it’s not dangerous.

Professor: It causes a person to become unable to think and to be short-tempered, then breath problems, heart attacks appears and death comes inevitably. At the end I’d like to say don’t inhale purposely any drug. Think about how hard it is to stop. Have you got any questions?

Elvira (a member of the team “Pro”): Lately I’ve been smoking marijuana more and more. I’m afraid that I’m going to become addicted. How can you tell if you are addicted to drugs?

Professor: Any kind of experimentation with drugs is dangerous. Even a single recreational use of a so-called soft drug like marijuana is enough to put you at serious risk.

Irene (a member of the team “Pro”): But they say that it’s harmless and I don’t notice any changes in my health.

Professor: The idea of harmless social drug use is “a total myth”. If you‘ve been less interested in life, if you can’t do anymore without smoking first, then you need to stop thinking of your habit as casual and get yourself some help to quit.

Leader: Thank you Professor. And now let’s see the performance of the 11 form pupils.

Quiet music. 2 pupils appear on the scene.

Pupil 1

For the unquiet heart and brain
Use in measured language lies -
The sad mechanic exercise
Like dull narcotics numbing pain.
Oh, deep in my heart I do believe
We shall live without drugs someday.

Pupil 2

There comes a time when we hear a certain call
And the world must come together as one
There are people dying and it’s time to stop drugs
In life, the greatest gift of all.
We can’t go on pretending day by day
That someone will soon make a change
Let’s forbid all drugs in the world
We need to take them all in one cage.
We are the world
We are the ones who make a brighter day
There is a choice we are making,
We are saving our own lives
It’s true we make a better day!

Leader: Come here friends. Here you can see a poisoned tree. Let’s put all the poison into Pandora’s box. Help me friends. (рисунок 2)

On the tree there are leaves where the names of different drugs written. Pupils read them out, take them off and put into Pandora’s box. Pandora is the mythological creature, which seeds all evil in the world.

Leader: Let’s swear! Repeat after me! Don’t open this Pandora’s box. Never. We were not born for drugs, alcohol and tobacco. We were born to be happy. Thank you for participating in our performance. I wish you good luck and health.
