T: Good morning, dear friends! We are going to have some fun today. We are going to practice Satellite Link “Boston – Sergiev Posad”. You have to imagine that you are Russian and American students on TV. It’s up to you how you develop your roles. Everybody will have an opportunity to express his or her opinions. I hope you’ll find something interesting and new for yourselves. Let’s start.

Am 1. Hello, our Russian friends! We are glad to see you. We welcome you in our city Boston. I am going to represent our library – The John F. Kennedy Library. (Приложение 1) The John F. Kennedy residential Library and Museum is dedicated to the memory of our nation’s 35-th president and to all those who through the art of politics seek a new and better world. Located on a ten – acre park, the library stands as a vibrant tribute to the life and times of John F. Kennedy. The Presidential library system formally began in 1939. A month before his death, President Kennedy visited Cambridge, Massachusetts, and chose a site next to Harvard University for the library. It was to be the place where the records of his Presidency could be kept and where he would have his office when he retired from public life. Plans for the Kennedy library began to take shape in December 1963. The Ernest Hemingway collection at the John F. Kennedy Library is the most comprehensive body of Hemingway material currently available in one place. Research in these materials is essential to anyone who attempts a definitive study of Hemingway. We offer interactive, guided school programs for elementary, middle, and high school students. Self-guided museum visits are available for middle and high school students.

T: And now I’d like you to make a dialogue. You have to ask whether they have books about outstanding people in America. And ask how the library is organized. Who wants to try?

Am.Lib.1: Good morning. Can I help you find something?

R 1: Yes. I'm interested in reading about famous Americans.

Am.Lib1: Is there anyone in particular you are interested in reading about?

R 1: Well, I wish I knew more about the outstanding people who have played a role in shaping American life and culture.

Am.Lib1: There are many people that have influenced life in America.

R 1: I wish I could read about all of these people. But I have only a few hours. If you were me and you had only a few hours, who would you read about?

Am.Lib1: If I were you, I would read about some of our writers and artists, such as Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, and Norman Rockwell, because they portray life in America through their work.

R 1: That sounds like a great place to start. I am also interested in reading about American architects, especially Frank Lloyd Wright, because the houses and buildings in America are so different than any I have ever seen.

Am.Lib2: Is there anything else you'd like to know?

R2: Yes. I would be very grateful if you could show rne where to find the books about these people.

Am.Lib2: Sure. If you follow me, I'll show you how our library is organized. Everything that we have in our library you can find listed on our computer system.

R2: Really? How does it work? How can I find the books I'm looking for?

Am.Lib2: Just type in the name of the author or the name of the book and the computer will tell you where the book is located in the library. It will also give you a short description of the book.

R2: How convenient!

Am.Lib2: Yes, that’s right. And if I were you, I’d also read about Boston while you are in the library, because it is one of our most historical cities.

T: Thank you! Let’s make an excursion of Boston. Here is our guide Nadya. Let’s watch a presentation about Boston. That will be our unusual trip. (Учащиеся составляют текст экскурсии, основываясь на тексте в учебнике “Happy English” книга 2 Т.Клементьевой и Дж. Шеннон стр.365-367.)

T: Thank you! Well, and what can you tell our American friends about your town. Let’s watch the next presentation and the next excursion. (Приложение 2)

Sergiev Posad is my native town.

I live in the city of Sergiev Posad which is situated not far from Moscow and which is famous for the Trinity Monastery founded in the 14th century by monk Sergey of Radonezh. Many historical events were closely connected with this monastery. For example, Prince Dmitrey of Don came to this monastery before the Battle on the Kulikovo field to seek for advance and blessing from Sergey of Radonezh. Peter the Great twice found refuge in this monastery, in 1682 and in 1689.In 1744 the monastery was elevated to the highest rank of “Lavra”. In 1782 the town around Lavra was called Sergiev Posad. It is necessary to say that the Trinity Monastery was always the center of Russian culture. Many artists and scholars used to live and work there. Such famous icon painter as Andrey Rublyov and Daneil Choyrney created many unique icons within the walls of this monastery. There is the History and Art museum on the territory of Lavra. A fine collection of icons can be seen in the State Art Museum. The people of Sergiev Posad displayed courage and heroism in the grim years of the Great Patriotic War. Today Sergiev Posad is a great industrial city of the Moscow Region. Sergiev Posad is also a cultural centre which is included into the tourist centre “The Golden Ring of Russia”. I am proud of my city.

T: Well, we have some questions from America.

Am.Lib1: In an American Library you might read a book or a magazine, watch a movie, listen to a record or cassette, enjoy concert, join a club, and borrow books. What can you do in your library?

P1: Our libraries are also organized very well. We have some big libraries in our town. There is the Central Children’s Library, the Central Region Library named by Rozonov, the Central Town Library named by Gorlovsky.

P2: I’d like to tell you about the Central Region Town named by Rozonov. It is a very old town library. In 2004 we celebrated the 85-th anniversary of its foundation. Some large libraries were united in this library. It was founded on the 24-th of August 1919. In 1953 the library moved to a new building on Valovaya Street. There are 2 floors in this building. There is the Children’s Hall, the Hall for Grown – ups, a Conference Hall and a Short Loan Collection Hall.

P1: In the library a lot of interesting meetings are held every month. We also can join clubs, borrow books, and get help with our homework. We can read books and magazines in the Short Loan Collection. We can enjoy different concerts there.

T: Thank you, girls. Let’s sum up what we know. Your next work will be in your AB. Open your AB on p.82. You should do ex.1. I give you 3 minutes to think and then we’ll check (Упражнение выводится на экран, с помощью интерактивной доски проверяется).
