The Olympic Games.

The world’s greatest international sports games are known as the Olympic Games. The Olympic idea means friendship, fraternity and cooperation among the people of the world. In 774 BC the first Olympic Games were held at the foot of the mount Olympus to honour the Greek’s God Zeus. Contests in running, jumping, discus throwing, boxing and horse and chariot racing were held in individual cities. But the winners came to mount Olympus every four years.

The Greeks calculated time in four year cycles called “Olympiads”.

In 394 AD the Olympic Games were forbidden.

The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. The French Baron Pierre de Coubertin renewed the Olympic Games. In 1896 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was organized. Over 150 countries are represented in the IOC at present.

The Olympic flag has five coloured interlaced rings (they represent five parts of the world) on the white background. The motto of the Olympic Games is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” (“Faster, Higher, Stronger”).

Russia joined the Olympic movement in 1952. In 1980 Moscow hosted the 22nd Olympic Games.

The Olympic Games cannot take place in states at war. Summer and winter Olympic Games are held separately, in different countries. Since 1936 the opening ceremony has been celebrated by lighting a flame which is called “Olympic flame”.
