Меня, как и многих учителей, волнует проблема поддержания интереса к иностранному языку у учащихся старших классов. Чтобы решить эту проблему я применяю активные формы работы с использованием накопленного богатого материала о странах изучаемого языка. В частности урок “Welcome to the Country of the Great Lakes”, проведённый в 10 классе, тому подтверждение. Данный урок расширил общеобразовательный кругозор учащихся по 1 разделу учебника Кузовлева В. П. 10-11 класс, “How Different the World Is”.
Тема: “Welcome to the Country of the Great Lakes”
Цели:
Познавательный аспект - познакомить с географическим положением Великих Озёр в США и их влиянием на климат страны, с основными понятиями (реалиями): American flag, Capital, administrative divisions, area, population, the nicknames of the states.
Развивающий аспект - развивать способность к догадке, способности к выбору выражений, адекватных ситуации общения, развивать познавательный интерес учащихся, способность осуществлять продуктивные речевые действия, умение работать с картой.
Воспитательный аспект - воспитывать уважительное отношение к другой культуре.
Учебный аспект - развивать умение читать с разными стратегиями (с целью поиска специфической информации, с целью понимания основного содержания, детального содержания), развивать навыки аудирования с пониманием основного содержания.
Сопутствующая задача - развивать умение говорить на основе услышанного и прочитанного.
Речевой материал:
Продуктивный: лексический - the geographical names, the names of the states, their nicknames.
Грамматический - союзы и выражения для описания причинно-следственных связей (because, thanks to(the fact), due to(the fact that), so, that’s why).
Оборудование: учебник 10 класса В. П. Кузовлев; видеомагнитофон, видеофильм о Великих Озёрах США, аудиозаписи с песнями об Америке, о штатах Америки, карта США, постеры с изображением штатов Америки, раздаточный материал.

I have prepared a very good news. The magazine “National Geographic” offers to all Russian pupils to take part in project “What Do You Know About..?” Try to guess what country it is sung about while listening to a song.(pupils listen to a song America, America by Susan H. Nipp and Pamela C. Beall. The words were written in 1987 to the tune of a 17-th century round.)

These lakes have 9,000miles of shoreline.
They cover 95,000 square miles.
They are the world’s greatest expanse of fresh water.
Their waters are summer playgrounds.
They cool cities and relieve thirsts.
These lakes provide ports a thousand miles inland.
The lakes are Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior.
They border eight states and one Canadian province.
The Great Lakes affect the regional climate.
They are climate makers.
In spring and summer they are cool and moderate temperature.
They store summer’s heat.
Then the Great Lakes give back this heat in the fall.
Heat energy released from the lake.
An amount enormous of energy is released each day.
It equals all of the electricity used in the US in one year.
