Social Classes in Britain

1) How do British people know which class another person comes from?
2) Do rich people in Great Britain automatically belong to the upper class?

British society is considered to be divided into three main groups of classes – the upper classes, the middle class, and the lower or working class. This is known as the class system and it is important to know something about it if you want to understand British people and society. Most British people grow up (вырасти) with a deep knowledge and understanding of the class system even if they are not very conscious of it (осознают). Most people know which class they belong to and are able (способны) to tell which class another person comes from by the way they speak, their clothes, their interests or even the type of food they eat.
Social class is not only about behaviour and attitudes (отношение).For example, although (хотя) many upper class people are rich may (могут) own a lot of land, having a lot of money does not make a person upper class. It is also important to come from a particular kind of family, have friends who are considered to be suitable, have been to a certain type of private school (частная школа) and speak with right kind of accent (акцент).There are people who are poor but who do not think of themselves as working class because their family background (происхождение), education, political opinions (политические мнения), etc. (так далее) are different to those of most working-class people. Many people do not like the class system but it is impossible to pretend that these differences do not exist (существовать) or that British people do not sometimes form opinions in this way.
(Учащиеся читают текст, находят нужную информацию, читают вслух и переводят найденные предложения.)

2) To practice rendering ideas from English into Russian. (Translation.)

Now please find the sentences with the highlighted constructions and get ready to read them out and translate.

(Учащиеся находят соответствующие предложения в тексте задания 2, в группах обсуждают варианты переводов. Каждая группа представляет по одному предложению, при необходимости корректирует ответы товарищей.)

3) To practice reading for a gist.

Below the text there are three tables. Scan them and answer the question above the tables.

Task 3.

 Do you agree that tables

a) show the typical differences between the classes?
b) present the opinions of all the British people?
c) encourage (поощрять) people to share the prejudices (предрассудки) of the British?
