F.D. Roosevelt

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one of the greatest politicians of his time. He was born in New York, on January 30, 1882. Young Franklin studied at Harvard and Columbia. He wasn’t going to be a politician, but one day he agreed to try that path and never left it. F. D. Roosevelt was elected President in 1932. The United States was in a depression. It was time when the economy didn’t grow and many people were out of work. Roosevelt promised the Americans a “New Deal”. He said that under the “New Deal”, government would be responsible for helping people during the hard times. Roosevelt brought new people into the government: college professors, business people, economists and labour experts – the best minds which he could find. Many new laws were passed. The New Deal laws had two goals. The first was to give some relief for the suffering which the depression had brought to the people. The second was to help farmers and businesses. The goals were achieved and the years of the Great Depression were overcome. People believed Roosevelt and in 1940 they elected him for the third term. When the war against Nazi Germany began, Roosevelt was among the first to realize that sooner or later the United States would have to fight. And he decided to get the country ready. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on Sunday morning, December7, 1941, shocked Americans. President Roosevelt acted quickly. On December 8, 1941, the United States declared war on Japan. And in the end Americans were among the winners of this war. Roosevelt was really the leader of the nation during World War II. He was the only person who was elected President for the fourth time. Americans remember F.D. Roosevelt as a person who served his country best. And the whole world was sorry when Roosevelt died in April, 1945.
