T: Good afternoon everybody, I`m glad to see you. To-day our lesson is devoted to a very exciting and interesting theme. We have spoken a lot about this wonderful (marvelous) country and its capital. I`d like you to demonstrate how well and much you know and remember.

T. First of all you should translate some expressions:

состоять из - consist of

омываться - to be washed by

отделять(ся) - to (be) separate(ed) from

быть окруженным - to be surrounded

находиться/располагаться - to be situated

гордиться - to be proud of

быть (чем-либо) известным - to be famous for

P1 - Oh, we have heard much about it. It`s cool!

T: So our friends are going to travel around Britain.

И имя ей Лутдин.
Её так дяденька назвал,
Который приходил
На остров тот давным-давно,

Ни парков, ни садов, ни шин,
А лишь окутывал те скалы
Седой, незыблемый туман.

Ребята, запомнили, как раньше назывался Лондон?

P1: The U.K. is situated on the British Isles. It is washed by the North Sea, by the Irish Sea. English Channel separates Gr.Br. from the continent. Each part has its own capital.

The capital of N.Ir - is Belfast.

The capital of Wales - is Cardiff.

The capital of Scotland - is Edinburgh.

The capital of England - is London.

P2: British flag is named the Union Jack. It consists of 3 crosses. Red cross belongs to England, St.George`s flag. The patron of England is St. George. St.George`s Day is celebrated on the 23d of April. The white diagonal cross belongs to Scotland. St. Andrew`s Day is celebrated on the 30th of November. The red diagonal cross belongs to N.Ir. St.Patrick`s Day is celebrated on the 17th of March. St.David`s Day is celebrated on the 1st of March. It`s the day of Wales.

P3: Each part of the U.K. has its own symbol. They are:

Thistle - is the symbol of Scotland.

Red Rose - is the symbol of England.

Daffodil - is the symbol of Wales.

Shamrock and Red Hand - is the symbol of Northern Ireland.

The national dress of Scotland is kilt.

The national musical instrument is bagpipe.

People who live in Scotland are called the English.

People who live in Northern Ireland are called the Irish.

People who live in Wales are called the Welsh.

People who live in England are called the English.

P4: The climate in the U.K. is mild. It often rains and the weather changes very often. It is often foggy.

P5: There are many big cities in Gr.Br.:

Oxford - is famous for universities.

Liverpool - is famous for "Beatles".

Stratford-on-Avon - the greatest writer W. Shakespeare was born.

Cambridge - stands on the river Cam. It`s famous for its University.

London - the capital, a cultural, historical, educational, trade city.

P1 - Buckingham Palace - the official residence of the Queen. It was built in 1837 the 1st Queen to live there was the young queen Victoria. Now there is a monument to her in front of the palace.

P2 - Trafalgar Square - is in the centre of London. It was called so in commemoration of the victorious battle of Trafalgar in 1805. There is a column to Admiral Nelson. It was built in 1840.

P3 - Big Ben - a clock Tower was built in 1859. It was called after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was very tall, and his nickname was Big Ben.

P4 - Westminster Abbey - was built in 1050 many famous people were buried there.

P5 - The Tower of London - was built in 1066 by W. the Conqueror. It was a fortress and palace. Then it was a prison (executed).

P6 - The British Museum - was founded in 1753. It has the largest collection of books.

P7 - Madam Tussaud`s Museum - the famous waxworks museum. You can meet great characters of art and history.

P8 - The Tower Bridge - it was built in 1849. It`s the biggest bridge. It split in two and raised itself in the air so that river traffic could pass through.

P9 - The Houses of Parliament - after the great fire a new palace was built in 1840.

P10 - St.Paul`s Cathedral - It is a church. Sir Christopher Wren built it. He spent 35 years.

T: Who opened new first Parliament?

P: Queen Victoria in 1849.

T: How many houses of P. do you know?

P: 2, the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

Traditions, holidays, famous people.

T.: Children, each country has its own traditions and holidays. What traditions and holidays, famous people do you know?

P1 - Christmas Day - is celebrated on the 25th of December.

P2 - Boxing Day - on the 26th of December.

P3 - Easter - in spring.

P4 - St. Valentine's Day - o the 14th of February.

P5 - Halloween - on the 31st of October.

P6 - British people are great tea-drinkers.

P7 - They are fond of gardening, domestic animals (dogs, cats).

P8 - They are polite.

P9 - The British are proud of their traditions.

T.: Ok. Super. Do you know any places which are connected with famous people?

P1 - Yes, I know. Stratford-upon-Avon. W. Shakespeare lived in this city.

P2 - I know. Liverpool. Pop-singers were from it. "The Beatles"

P3 - Westminster Abbey - Many famous people are buried here.

T.: What famous people do you know?

P1 - Charlie Chaplin - a famous film actor of silent films.

P2 - Agatha Christie - a famous writer. She wrote detective stories.

P3 - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - is famous for his stories about Sherlock Homes.

P4 - Daniel Defoe - a famous writer. He wrote his novel about Robinson Crusoe.

P5 - John Lennon - a singer, a musician of the Beatles.

P6 - W. Shakespeare - a well-known writer. He wrote many tragedies and comedies. "Romeo and Juliet", "Hamlet".

P7 - Joseph Turner - a famous artist a master of water-colours.

Wales: This is one of the parts of Gr.Br. It is the smallest one. The symbol of this part is Cardiff. People are fond of folk music, singing and poetry. The national flag is white and green with dragon.

Scotland: This part of Gr.Br. is situated in the North. It has the highest mountain - Ben Nevis. It is famous for its lake - Loch Ness. There are many hills and mountains there. The symbol of this part is thistle. The national dress is kilt and national instrument is the bagpipe.

England: This is the largest part of Gr.Br and the Uk. It has the largest territory and population. There are a lot of big industrial and cultural cities. The capital of this part is on the river Thames. The symbol of this part is red rose.

Northern Ireland: It is in the west of Gr.Br. It is small, but very picturesque. The symbol is a shamrock and a red hand. People celebrate Patrick`s day on the 17th of March. Irish people call Ireland "The Emerald Isles" - [`em?r?ld ail] - Изумрудный Остров.
