Aims:

  1. to develop pupils` speech and reading habits;
  2. to revise the topical vocabulary;
  3. to organize the using of the topical vocabulary in pupils` speech;
  4. to develop pupils` ability to understand the authentic text;
  5. to organize the individual work of the pupils and their pair work;
  6. to expend pupils` outlook. (The lesson is organized in the form of a presentation.)

Plan

I. The beginning of the lesson. Warming up.

1. T: Dear friends! Today we are going to speak about people who did or are doing smth for their people, about social problems in the world and in our country, and what people should do to make this society better. I`d like to begin the lesson with the words of S. Wright “Respect should be earned by actions and not acquired by years.”_Will you comment on the quotation? (students say what they think about it) (слайд 1)

_ Say what famous politicians you know and what they did or are doing for their peoples. (students speak about M. Gorbachov, J. Kennedy, Kofi A. Annan, A. Sakharov).

II. Practicing the topical vocabulary (слайд 2) Приложение

1. T: Let`s review the vocabulary. Look at the screen and find the English equivalents for the following: (ex. 45, p. 97)

III. Rights and freedoms. (Слайд 5)

T: We live in a legal society. It means that people of our society are entitled to some rights and freedoms.
– Who guarantees the rights and freedoms in the Russian Federation?
– In what documents can you find them?
– Do you know any basic rights and freedoms people have?
– Look at the screen and name them. (ex.47, p. 98) (The rights to: work/ health care/ education/ travel/ housing/ life/ fair trial/ equality vote. Freedoms of: conscience/ speech.)
– How well are they observed in our country and how are they or were they abused? Are there any cases when the rights are broken? Give some examples. (students give examples)

IV. The United Nations Organization. (Слайд 6)

T: These basic human rights are international. There are some organizations which defend them. You have read about the organization which plays a great role in defending of human rights. Be ready to answer the questions.
(While checking up the homework two students get and do individual tasks. See appendix 1,2)

V. Talk about A.S. Griboedov. (Слайд 8)

1. T: Not only political organizations but also outstanding politicians can be much importance in the life of a country. Look at the screen. Have you ever heard the name of A.S.Griboedov? … He was also an outstanding diplomat.
2. T: I suggest you should be divided into two groups. You are to work in pairs. Read a text each and ask questions to get more information. You have two minutes for reading.
(Checking up those who were busy with cards.)

VI. Listening comprehension. (Слайд 9)

1. T: The name of this woman is well-known all over the world. She is Margaret Thatcher. You should listen to the text about this woman and do the test.

Appendix 3

Text for listening comprehension.

Margaret Thatcher was born in 1925. Her father had a grocer shop but was also interested in politics. She was a good student and won a scholarship. She entered Oxford university to study chemistry. Then Margaret worked as a chemist, married and decided to study law. She was already involved in politics and gave up law when she was elected to the Parliament in 1959. From 1970 to 1974 she was Secretary of State Education. In 1975 M. Thatcher became leader of the Conservative Party which was the Opposition. In 1979 she beat the Labour Party and took office as Prime Minister. She privatized publicly-owned industries and made cuts in state education, hospitals. In 1982 Britain became involved in undeclared war against Argentina in the Falkland Islands. After the victory she had an image of a strong, authoritative leader. In the 1983 election campaign she won her third term as Prime Minister defeating the Labour Party. On November 22, 1990, she resigned. “The Iron Lady” who believe it was her destiny to change the British nation shed tears as she made the historic announcement. Three men were candidates for the post of Prime Minister. John Major was to win.
