The Savitsky Art Gallery

The pride of Penza is the Savitsky Art Gallery named after the painter and first director of the Penza Fine Arts School. It is a visiting-card of our city. It is one of the oldest art galleries in all of Russia having been founded in 1897. The building is erected in “modern” style by famous St.Petersburg architect A.I.Gogen in 1912.

But it is not only an architectural monument, it is a church of art in our city! It is a magnificent display of works by Russian and foreign painters. The gallery contains a collection of over four thousands works including paintings, engravings, and sculptures by Russian and West-European masters as well as all the priceless Russian icons of the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Three halls are devoted to the painters: K.Savitsky, I.Goryshkin-Sorokopudov and F.Lentulov whose creative work is linked with Penza.

Nearly 600 works are treasures of Western European Art. They are represented by a rich collection of paintings, graphics and sculpture. The pride of this collection are the Italian, Dutch and French paintings from the 17th century and Russian art of the 19th century mainly represented by portraits and the priceless Russian icons of the 16th-18th centuries.

In addition to its permanent collection, the gallery also hosts many special exhibitions brought from

other museums as well as displaying works by modern-day Penzan artists.

Text C (Приложение 3). Penza possesses an interesting collection of traditional folk art in the Folk Art Museum. What would you tell your foreign friend about this museum?

The Folk Art Museum

Not only professional works of art are found in Penza, but also wonderful and colorful works of traditional folk art. Russia is famous over the world for its “Matroshki” dolls and Abashev toys, as well as for its traditional, unique painting style found on kitchen utensils and even furniture. All of these things can be seen at the Museum of Folk Art.

The Folk Art Museum was opened in Penza in January 1975. The status of the state museum was given to it only in 1992. The museum building itself is a monument of the Russian skilful wooden architecture of the mid-19th century, made by the Sorokin brothers from Kameshkir.

Oh, it is like a fairy-tale house in a big modern city! When you look at it you understand the beauty of the Russian house and admire the talent of Russian masters!

The Folk Art Museum exibits wonderful works of traditional folk art. It keeps and gives new life to the traditional handicrafts of Penza region. The property of the museum is T.N.Zotkin’s pottery, R.F.Kochurin’s wood carving articles, E.K.Medyantseva’s straw works, A.I.Andreeva’s carpets… There are nearly 4000 exhibits in the Folk Art Museum. Personal exhibitions of local masters take place in the museum.

Any foreign visitor will be especially interested in what is unique only to the Penza region, so this will be a necessary stop during any tour. Even the exterior of the museum is an example of the traditional folk art represented on a smaller scale inside.

You should visit the museum by all means!

2) Meet in expert groups.

a) Compare your answers. Try to reach (достичь) an agreement.

b) Collect the arguments.

3) Meet in home groups.

a) Take turns (очередь) to retell your group the information you’ve read.

b) Ask your friends’ arguments.

4) The whole class work.

(При совместном обсуждении всех текстов учитель может спросить любого ученика ответить на вопросы по любому тексту).
