T: OK. Thanks for your dialogue.

4. Игра (лексическая) с извлечением информации.

T: Now, dear friends, let’s play a game.

If you’ll go somewhere to travel, you should know some symbols and notes which you can meet at the airport, in the railway or bus stations. Now imagine that we are in the biggest airport in the UK and the world’s busiest airport, it has 28 million passengers per year. Do you know what airport I mean?

– Yes, it’s the Heathrow Airport, in London.

I hope you know the meaning of these inscriptions (слайд 3). You should point the number of the picture and the meaning.

5. Знакомство с новым материалом (презентация). Извлечение специальной информации.

T: Now we are in London, in the capital of Great Britain (слайд 4). And let’s begin our tour around London. London is situated on the river Thames (слайд 5). Here you can see Tower bridge on the river Thames (слайд 6). The most important industrial cities are: Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, Birmingham and others (слайд 7). Oxford and Cambridge are famous university cities (слайд 8).

P1: (Trafalgar Square)

Now you can see the geographical center of London - Trafalgar Square. It is also a historical place (слайд 9). In the middle of it there is the famous Nelson Column, which was built in memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar (слайд 10).

P2: (The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben)

We are in Westminster now. It is the most important part of London. Here you see the Houses of Parliament (слайд 11). It is the group of buildings, where the House of Lords (палата Лордов) and the House of Commons (палата Общин) sit. (слайд 12). It has two towers: The Clock Tower with Big Ben– the bell that strikes the hours inside the great clock of the Houses of Parliament (слайд 13), and the second Tower–the Victoria Tower with the national flag over it (слайд 14).

P3: (Westminster Abbey)

Opposite the Houses of Parliament is Westminster Abbey, it’s a church (слайд 15). The present building was started in 1245. Most British Kings and Queens were crowned there, and many famous people are buried [berid] there (слайд 16).

P4: (Hyde Park)

Another interesting sight in the West End is Hyde Park. It is the largest of London parks and is famous for its Speakers’ Corner which attracts a lot of tourists (слайд 17). The West End is full of museums, art galleries, the best theatres, cinemas, expensive clubs and shops.

P5: (The British Museum)

Another famous place in London is the British Museum, it’s the national museum of Britain, founded in 1753. It has one of the world’s best collections of decorative art and houses many of the world’s greatest treasures (слайд 18).

P6: (The National Gallery)

Here, there is also the National Gallery. It’s an art gallery with its wonderful collection of western paintings in Britain. It was founded in 1824 and houses one of the most important collections of Italian paintings outside Italy (слайд 19).

P7: (The City)

Now, we go to the City, which is a small area, but is the business and commercial heart of London (слайд 20). Very few people live in the City. All the main banks and the offices are situated in the City (слайд 21). In the centre of the City there is the Tower of London, it was founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century and was used by him as a fortress and a palace. Later, it was made a prison. At last it was transformed into a tourist attraction, a museum. Now it contains no prisoners, it has the Crown treasures and legends (слайд 22).

P8: (St. Paul’s Cathedral)

Now you can see the main cathedral in London– it’s the St. Paul’s Cathedral. It was designed in 17th century by Christopher Wren (слайд 23). St. Paul’s Cathedral is the main church of London. It’s so big! Londoners treasure it, because many famous people are buried [berid] there, Lord Nelson, for example (слайд 24).

P9: (Piccadilly Circus)

Now we are on Piccadilly Circus is the busiest square in central London, known for the figure of Eros in the middle, for its lively nightlife and for its flocks of pigeons (слайд 25). It’s used as a meeting place for rallies. That’s why if you are in Piccadilly Circus you can meet very strange- looking young people wearing all kinds of fancy clothes and speaking different languages (слайд 26).

P10: (The Buckingham Palace)

And at finish of our tour around London – you can see the most popular and attractive place for the tourists – The Buckingham Palace (слайд 27). The Buckingham Palace is the London residence of the British Queen– Elizabeth II. It was built and decorated by the best British designers in 1703, but the Queen likes to stay at her castles outside London (слайд 28). Also here you can see the Guards in sentry boxes outside Buckingham Palace. The Guards are changed every morning (слайд 29).

8. Аудирование рассказа

а) Представление незнакомых слов (слайд 32).
boastful-хвастливый, vulgar- грубый, easy- going- беспечный, веселый, amiable- любезный, ruthless- безжалостный, to be cautious- быть осторожным.

б) Аудирование рассказа в аудиозаписи “The English”

Almost every nation has a reputation of some kind. The French are supposed to be gay, and fond of champagne; the Germans – dull, formal, fond of military uniforms, and parades; the Americans – boastful, energetic, and vulgar. The English are reputed to be cold, reserved, easy – going, and fond of sports.
The English are a nation of stay–at–homes. There is no place like home, they say. The English prefer small houses, built for one family, perhaps with a small garden.
The fire is focus of the English home. Other nations go out to cafes or sit round the cocktail bar. For the English it is the open fire and the ceremony of English tea. Even when central heating is installed it is kept so low in the English home that Americans and Russians get chilblains, as the English get nervous headaches from stuffiness.
Foreigners often picture the Englishman dressed in tweeds, smoking a pipe, walking across the open countryside with his dog at his heels. This is the picture of the aristocratic Englishman during his holidays on his country estate. Since most of the open countryside is private there isn’t much left for the others to walk across.
The English are considered to be the most amiable people in the world. They can be very ruthless. They have a genius for compromise, but can enforce their idea of compromise on others with surprising efficiency. They are generous in small matters but more cautious in big ones.

b) big houses, built for one family.
c) small houses, built for two or more families.

4) What is the focus of the English home?
a) the ceremony of English coffee.
b) the open fire.
c) the ceremony of Indian tea.

5) What is the picture of the aristocratic Englishman?
a) dressed in silks, smoking a pipe.
b) dressed in tweeds, smoking a pipe.
c) dressed in cottons, smoking a pipe.
