Ход урока

T.: Hello, dear children! Let me ask you an unusual question. How much food do you think you will eat by the time you are seventy-nine?

Учащиеся высказывают свои предположения.

T.: Now let’s find out how much the average Frenchwoman, for example, will eat:

  • 25 cows
  • 40 sheep
  • 35 pigs
  • 1,200 chickens
  • 2.07 tonnes of fish
  • 5.05 tonnes of potatoes
  • 30,000 litres of milk
  • 13,000 eggs
  • 50,000 loaves of bread
  • 9,000 litres of orange juice
  • 1,37 tonnes of apples
  • 768 kg of oranges
  • 720 kg of tomatoes

T.: Delicious, isn’t it? How many cows and pigs have you swallowed already? Scientists say that we eat about half-a-ton of food a year – not counting drink! Some people eat even more. Where do you think the most number of the fattest people live?

Учащиеся высказывают свои предположения , а затем читают текст, знакомясь с данными Всемирной Организации Здравоохранения.

According to WHO ( World Health Organization ), Americans are the fattest people in the world. 55%of women and 63% of men over 25 are overweight or obese. ( Doctors say that you are obese if you weigh at least 30% above ideal body weight.)

“Compared to Europeans, Americans eat all the time”, writes Joanna Coles , a British correspondent for The Guardian. “ At the hairdressers, in their cars, during college lectures, while waiting in hospitals and at the cinema, where they arrive clutching monster buckets of pop-corn, Doberman sized hot-dogs and containers (!) of diet Pepsi.”

Though America is the world leader in obesity, Europe is quickly catching up. According to WHO, almost one-third of people living in the European Union are now overweight and one in 10 is obese.

Britain has replaced Germany as Europe’s most overweight nation! 20% of women and 17% of men are obese. And the English are fatter than the Scots or Welsh. Russia also has some of the heaviest people in Europe. Even in such countries as France, Italy and Sweden, Europe’s slimmest nations, people (especially women ) are becoming fatter.

Among the French, Italians and Swedish, who are considered to be Europe’s slimmest nations, the number of overweight people is dramatically rising.

T.: What do you think why the number of overweight people is rising?

Учащиеся отвечают на вопросы. Возможны варианты ответов:

P1: We eat a lot of fast food.

P2: We have no time to relax and enjoy a meal. We want to eat fast.

T.: You are right. We live in the era of fast food culture. Every day a new McDonald’s restaurant opens somewhere on our planet. Here is a newspaper article about the history of McDonald’s in the UK.(Complete the information with the right form of the verbs)

McDonald’s ( to arrive) in the UK in 1974. The first restaurant ( to open) in Woolwich, southeast London.

Since those early days they (to serve) food and drinks to their customers. Over 550 restaurants (to open) in Britain. And about 1 million customers (to serve).

T.: What are another reasons for overweighting ?

Учащиеся высказывают свои предположения. Возможны варианты ответов:

P1: People walk less, because they prefer to use cars or public transport.

P2: They spend too much time in front of their computers or TV .

T.: Yes, another reason is lack of exercise. Now let’s learn more about healthy food and lifestyle.

Учащимся предлагается текст для прочтения:

What is tasty is not always healthy.

Doctors say that chips and pizzas are fattening, Coca-Cola spoils our teeth, coffee shortens our lives.

If you go on eating too much, you’ll become obese, and obesity leads to heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

If you are young and fit, don’t think this doesn’t concern you. Teenagers, too, are getting fatter. Obesity rates in teens, according to experts, are doubling!

Surveys show that the favourite foods among teenagers both in Europe and the USA are:

  • hamburgers (cheeseburgers, fishburgers, beefburgers, eggburgers…. In fact anythingburgers!)
  • chips (they are called French fries in America)
  • hot dogs
  • pizzas
  • icecream

Besides, teenagers in Britain, for example, spend 27 hours a week watching TV, and nobody knows how much time they sit in front of their computers.

What will today’s teenagers look like when they grow up? Imagine yourself as a lazy, fat old man or woman with eyes glued to the TV screen, hands digging down in a packet of chips, munch-munch, staring at the glaring pictures. A real nightmare! But this is the danger hanging over your life!

Some scientists believe that food influences not only our bodies but our spirits as well. Foods with lots of additives, fat or sugar can make you violent and anti-social. Natural foods like fresh fruit and vegetables which contain lots of vitamins and minerals can make you more intelligent, optimistic and energetic.

More and more people nowadays become vegetarians.

A diet free from meat, researches say, has all the vitamins, minerals and protein you need.

And you could live longer as a veggie!

A vegetarian diet is not only healthier, but it is also kinder. Animals grown for meat production are now kept in special factory farms. Pigs, calves and chickens are locked in boxes and cannot even turn around. Calves are kept thirsty – the lack of liquid keeps the meat white! If you really care about animals – and most of us do – stop eating them!

T.: Are you, dear children, ready to be a veggie?

Учащиеся высказывают свои аргументы за и против вегетарианства, используя речевые функции:

Expressing opinion:

  • I(don’t) think/imagine/feel/believe (that)…
  • In my opinion, ..,
  • Personally, I believe/think,etc (that)…
  • If you ask me, …
  • It seems to me (that) …
  • In my view, …
  • To my mind, …

Agreeing and disagreeing:

  • I (completely) (dis)agree with you.
  • Yes, you’re right.
  • That’s right/true.
  • Exactly!
  • I couldn’t agree more.
  • There’s a lot in what you say.
  • I can see what you mean.
  • I’m afraid I don’t agree with you.

Возможны варианты ответов:

P1: In my opinion, vegetarianism is silly. You can’t live for ever on cucumbers and apples, can you ? Organic foods are full of pesticides. What’s the use of becoming a veggie ?

P2: I can see what you mean. Some people still believe that you can’t live without meat but modern scientific research shows that all the nutrients we need for a healthy life can be found in plants.

P3: If you ask me, you never see a tiger or a lion feeling sorry for its victim, do you ?

P4: I’m afraid I don’t agree with you. If you went to the slaughterhouse to see how animals are killed, you wouldn’t eat meat.

P5: There’s a lot in what you say, but our grandparents and great grandparents and great great grandparents ate meat and were happy, so why should I become a veggie ?

T.: Do you know that your tastes in food and drink can reveal your character ? Read about Charlie Chilli, Suzie Sweet-Tooth, Hungry Harry and Picky Polly and see which one you identify with.

Charlie Chilli: I love eating hot, spicy food. I enjoy trying foreign specialties in restaurants, and I’m also fond of preparing exotic dishes in my own kitchen. I hate eating the same thing to days running - I would rather go hungry.

Suzie Sweet-Tooth: I don’t mind what I eat, as long as there is some chocolate on the menu. I adore desserts: I have so many favorites I often find it difficult to choose. I like milk shakes and fizzy drinks better than tea or coffee.

Hungry Harry: I am more interested in quantity than quality. I can’t stand getting up from the table if I still have room in my stomach. I prefer rice or potatoes and cooked vegetables to salads and would rather drink Coke thаn fruit juice.

Picky Polly: I’m not keen on dishes which don’t look beautiful. In fact, I haven’t got a large appetite. There are all sorts of things I refuse to eat at all, and even when I’m given one of my favorites I always leave half of it on the plate.

Character Analysis: Chilli eaters are brave and adventurous. They like to shock, but they get bored and restless very easily.

Sweet eaters are easy going and sociable but they lack confidence. They are kind and sympathetic but not always reliable.

Hungry eaters are hard-working and generous; they aren’t ambitious and hate changes of any sort. They worry about the future.

Picky eaters are artistic and sensitive but they lose their tempers easily. They set themselves very high standards and don’t like to fail.

T.: We have to finish now. Thank you very much for you answers. I hope you will follow the healthy lifestyle and remember: we are what we eat.
