Цель: учить читать с извлечением конкретной информации в тексте и использовать ее в качестве языковой (речевой) содержательной опоры для развития умений в устной и письменной речи по теме.

Задачи:

  1. Улучшение произносительных навыков (тренировка чтения слов в транскрипции).
  2. Повторение и активизация лексического материала по теме «Спорт».
  3. Повторение и активизация грамматического материала (специальные вопросы).
  4. Формирование навыков записи (доводов защиты).
  5. Формирование навыков догадки значения слов по эквивалентам и контексту.
  6. Развитие умений и навыков чтения с общим охватом с целью извлечения конкретной информации.
  7. Воспитание любознательности, познавательных потребностей, желания расширить кругозор.

Оборудование:

  • «Книга для чтения», фотографий знаменитых фигуристов;
  • мультимедийный проектор для проецирования слов по теме, вопросов в качестве плана высказывания.

Ход урока

I. Introduction.

II. Warm-up activities.

Teacher: The topic of our lesson is «Sport history». As we know a lot of sports competitions are held in Russia, Europe and Asia. Many famous sportsmen and sportswomen from different countries take part in them and show brilliant results. Answer the questions.:

  1. What outstanding sportsmen and sportswomen do you know?
  2. What kind of sport do they compete in?

Work in pairs.

Pupils read the informational and try to choose the facts for answering the questions in pairs. Each pair works with one article. Then they share the information with their classmates. While listening to classmates pupils can see the articles.

Possible answers.

The first pair. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are a pair of ice-dancers. They represented Britain, won a gold medal and a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics. They were awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1999. That,s why they are honoured in the museum.

Pair 2. Richard Button represented the USA. He was a five-time world champion, won the gold medals at the two Winter Olympics. He got the Sullivan Award. That,s why he is honoured in the museum.

Pair 3. Scott Hamilton represented the USA. He is a former figure-skater. He won gold medals at the Olympic Games, in the World Figure Skating Championship. Besides, he took the first place in the US Championship in 1982. Moreover, the sportsman became the first at the 1984 Winter Olympics, the 1984 World Championship and then turned professional. That,s why he is honoured in the museum.

Pair 4. Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov were a pair of Soviet figure skaters. They won gold at several World Figure Skating Championships, the 1988 Winter Olympics in Galgary, Canada, in Lillehammer in 1994.Then they turned professional. Besides, they never finished lower than the second place. That,s why they are honoured in the museum.

Pair 5. Midori Ito represented Japan. She became the first Asian world champion in 1989. She got five perfect marks of 6.0 for her performance, became the second in 1990 and the fourth in 1991. She was very attractive and impressive. She is honoured in the museum for her best results.

Pair 6. Sonja Henia was a Norwegian-born American world champion figure skater and Olympic gold medalist. Sonja won six European titles, 10 world titles and three gold medals in the three Winter Olympic Games. She has won more Olympic and world titles than any other lady – figure skaters. That,s why she is honoured in the museum.

Pair 7. Katarina Witt represented Germany. She won two Olympic gold medals in Sarajevo and Calgary, four World Championships, six European Championships. She is honoured in the museum for her brilliant achievements.

4. Teacher: Read the text again. Do Task 3. Restore the questions and answer them. Work in groups.

A teacher controls pupils, notes of special questions and their answers, corrects them.

Teacher: Time is over. Ask questions to other group in chain. Name the classmate who must answer the question.

Whose group has worked harder? Whose group is more friendly? If you don,t like any answer, give it yourselves.

V. Post-reading activities.

Teacher: Let,s do Task 4. Read the information about Russian figure skaters in LCG.

Imagine that you are skating officials from Russia. Prove that these ice-dancers are worthy of being included in the Halls of Fame.

Work in groups, make a speech and represent your candidates.

Possible answers.

1. Our candidates are Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin. These ice-dancers are worthy of being included in the Halls of Fame. Firstly, they won the pairs World Figure Skating Champion title twice. Secondly, they were five-time European champions. Besides, these figure skaters won the gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin. I,d like to stress that they made not only Russian figure skating famous but popular and attractive in the world.

2. Yevgeniy Plushenko is our candidate to be honoured in the World Figure Skating Museum and the Halls of Fame. He is worthy of being included in the Halls of Fame because firstly, he is the six-time National Champion, five-time European champion, three-time World Champion. Moreover, Yevgeniy won the gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics and got a silver medal at Salt Lake City, the USA. I am sure that he became famous for his achievements and made figure skating famous. I think he achieved the highest honour to be included in the Halls of Fame.

3. Our candidates Tatyana Navka and Roman Kostomarov are worthy of being included in the Halls of Fame. Firstly, they are multiple gold medals. They won the gold medal in the couples ice-dancing competitions at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Besides, these figure skaters won the two World Championships and the European Championships. I,d like to stress they represented the Russian Federation brilliantly and made figure skating popular wide-world.

4. I,d like to represent our candidate Irina Slutskaya. I am sure she is worthy of being included in the Halls of Fame. Firstly, she is a two-time World Champion. Secondly, she is a seven-time European Champion and a two-time Olympic medalist. Moreover, Irina has won a total of 40 gold medals, 21 silver medals and 18 bronze medals. Besides, she became the first woman ever to win seven European titles. At last, she became the second Russian ever to win a medal in the women ‘s event. I am sure Irina deserves the award to be included in the Halls of Fame.

Teacher: I agree with you. All the candidates are worthy of being included in the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame.

VI. The conclusion of the lesson.

Teacher: As I know, the Modern Sport Museum was also established in Moscow, Russia. You can see the achievements of Soviet and Russian sportsmen there. Besides, in Syktyvkar, the capital of the Republic of Komy there is a museum devoted to Raisa Smetanina, a distinguished Russian skier.

Your homework is to find the information about famous sportsmen and sportswomen of the Republic of Komy, write down and prove if they can be honoured in the World Sport Museum.
