“ IS IT EASY TO BE YOUNG? ”

1. Introduction

Good morning dear children and dear guests, today at our lesson we will try to discuss the topic Is it easy оr difficult to be young? My pupils are divided today into two groups and they will try to improve their points of view.

As you know everything in Nature has its beginning, development and ending. I mean each creature is born, lives then dies. The humans have young age, middle age and old age.

I’d like to mention that each age has its beauty and charm, its positive sides. But unfortunately, a medal has two sides. So we’ll have to speak about good and bad sides of being young too. In another words we are going to speak about ups and downs of the age.

What can you say about your generation?

We are a generation of very rapid and complicated life with technological, scientific and social changes. Too many new things and information is appearing every day. We must know everything: about cultural, political, economical and scientific events. It’ not easy for an adult person because demands a lot of time and efforts. For teens it’s much more difficult because they want everything and at the moment. They want to enjoy life, be independent, earn money… .

Young generation I see has a lot of ambitions.

Can you continue the list of teens’ life ambitions?

2. Teens’ ambitions

(they want to…)

  • Enjoy life
  • Be independent
  • Express their individuality
  • Do well at school
  • Earn money
  • Change the world to the best
  • Be taken seriously
  • To have the rights

But can they (teens) achieve their aim? Is it easy to do all the things they want?

Of course, not. What problems do the young face to (meet, have) on their way?

It’s really so many teens’ problems. Like any citizen in Russia every teenager has not only rights but duties. Of course, there are different kinds of problems. What are they?

(Dealing with friends, parents, teachers at school, classmates, dating, joining the army, getting a job, having not enough money, watching violent films, dieting and even being young) Let’s discuss some of them!

4. Dear children! There are envelopes on your desks.

They contain the tasks for you.

Read the poem!

Understand it!

Be ready to do some exercises!

Well my parents are fine, I can’t complain,
But there are things that they’ll have to explain.
They can’t stand my music, my clothes and my mates,
And they nag me for days if I come home late.
But when I say that I’ve grown up and need my space,
They don’t listen. They just make a clever face.
They control me no matter how much I object.
They don’t understand a thing about respect.
My parents are choosing who I should be,
But why don’t they leave the decision to me?
They never forget to say what they expect,
But what about friendship, trust and respect?
And then they talk about my future and success,
I don’t listen because I couldn’t care less.
I upset them because I always disobey,
But I hope they will be proud of me one day.
I’m quite cool, my parents shouldn’t complain,
But there are things that I’ll have to explain.
I get on their nerves and I drive them mad,
So now is the time to say sorry for that.

Answer the questions!

What problems does John have with his parents?
What is John fed up with?
What problems do John’s parents have with him?
Does John understand his own faults?
What things does John say are the most important in his relationship with his parents?

Tick all the problems that John mentions!

1) Parents make their children do chores.
2) They nag their children.
3) Parents don’t give their children any pocket money.
4) Dads and Mums control their children.
5) Parents don’t understand their children.
6) They don’t respect their children.
7) Parents don’t trust their children.

10) Parents hate their children’s boy/girlfriends.
11) Parents don’t like their children’s music.
12) They don’t pay attention to their children.
13) Parents punish their children for everything.

What should I do? Please, give me advice.

Will you read them aloud and another group tries to translate it.

ADVICE 1. Remember, you are a unique. Do not compare yourself with any one else.
ADVICE 2: Do something for someone else. The people you are helping will think you are something special.
ADVICE 3: Keep notes of your problems. You can do it in code if you worry about privacy. By the end of the month , you will see how many problems you really can solve
ADVICE 4: Allow yourself to fail. We do learn from experience. Each failure teaches us something.
ADVICE 5: Work out your own motto. For example, "I am doing my best.", "I am a great person". Repeat it wherever you start feeling blue.
ADVICE 6: Be tolerant , respect different opinions and make the world happier.***

Teacher: Which advice do you like best? Is it useful or useless?

Students answer the teacher`s questions.

7. Create your own T-shirts with your motto.

For example,

Let`s change the world to the best
Say "no" to drugs (alcohol, cigarettes)
Say "yes" to freedom (piece, love, tolerance, friendship)
Everyone has the right to life (non-discrimination)
Put cigarettes (alcohol, drugs) out of fashion.
Being a teenager means to be happy (to have great fun).

Students create T-shirts with messages and display them on the blackboard. They can choose the best message.

Students say their opinions and make a conclusion.
