ХОД УРОКА

I. Организационный момент

Teacher: Good morning. Take your seats, please and get ready for the lesson. You are welcome at our conference. The main question we are going to discuss today is the environmental problems. Today we must pay attention to the main problems our planet suffers from and find the way out. We will decide what can save the Earth. We'll listen and discuss several reports.

Конференция. Запись на доске.

1. The most serious environmental problems.
2. The crucial problems in order of their importance.
3. The ways of the world improvement.
4. The ways to save the Earth (recycling, organizing a "clear-up day").

II. Речевая зарядка

– Listen to the poem written by a British girl Miriam Mackley on p. 53 ex. 50.
– Do you agree or disagree with the author of the poem? Why?

III. Конференция. (Аудирование текста)

The groups of students have prepared the reports. Please, the girls, you are welcome. They will tell us about the most serious environmental problems.

Nature Protection

Computers project that between now and the year of 2030 we are going to have an increase of the average temperature between 1,5 - 4,5 degrees C. Sea levels would rise by several metres, flooding coastal areas and running vast tracts of farmland. Huge areas would be infertile and become uninhabitable. Water contamination could lead to shortages of safe drinking water. It looks like the end of civilization on the Earth.
For hundreds of thousands of years the human race has thriven in Earth's environment. But now, at the end of the 20™ century, we are at a crucial turning point. We have upset nature's sensitive equilibrium releasing harmful substance into the air, polluting rivers and oceans with industrial waste and tearing up the countryside to accommodate our rubbish. These are the consequences of the development of civilization. We are to stop it by joint efforts of all the people of the world.
The range of environmental problems is wide. But the matters of people's great concern nowadays are atmosphere and climate changes, depletion of the ozone layer, freshwater resources, oceans and coastal areas, deforestation and desertification, biological diversity, biotechnology, health and chemical safety. United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) concentrates its activities on these issues.
Thank you, girls. And I want to attract your attention to the cards which were given to you before the lesson. You'll have to answer some question on the 1th text. Card:

1. How have people upset nature's sensitive equilibrium?
2. What is the way to stop the consequences of the development of civilization?
3. What are the matters of people's great concern nowadays?
4. What organization concentrates its activities on these issues? Teacher: Now we continue. Let's pass over to the next question. The boys will tell you about the importance of the crucial problems. Listen, please.

Environmental problems

As you may understand, our planet is in danger. Among the most serious problems, such as air pollution, water pollution, nuclear pollution we can underline dangerous diseases, people's interrelations, breaking human rights, crimes and drugs. Of course, all of the problems are very important, but we can list them in order of their importance.

1. Drugs.
2. Dangerous diseases.
3. Pollution.
4. Crimes.
5. Endangered animals.
6. New local wars.
7. Dangerous technologies.
8. Lack of recycling.
9. People and their interrelations.
10. Breaking human rights.
11. Star wars.

Teacher: Now, will you read the questions on the second report?

1. Are there many problems on the Earth?
2. Which problem do you find the most serious?

Teacher: It's clear that not only the environment suffers from the man. Human beings also make harm to themselves. The next report is connected with the ways of the world improvement. Listen to the girls' report.

How to save our planet

It is well known that people make all the problems themselves. But they seldom think what will happen then. Unfortunately people nowadays often tell lies, they argue and fight. Luckily, there are always ways out. We could improve our world, make it closer to the perfect one. In a perfect world people never argue, so they have no need to fight or make wars. All people work and get a lot of money so there are no crimes. They don't tell lies to each other. People in the perfect world always protect nature. They travel on foot or by cars without petrol. So, you can often see people riding bicycles. People are healthy because they don't smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs. They always eat healthy food: fruit and vegetables, dairy products. If I could improve our world the first things I would do is stop people fighting. Second, I would, punish strictly those ones who make crimes. Finally, I would also make a law to protect our nature. And you?
Teacher: Thank you, girls. That was the last report at our conference. Take the cards and answer the questions. Will you read the questions?
Who makes all the problems?  What would you do to improve the world?

IV. Чтение текста с полным пониманием прочитанного.

Teacher: Now it's turn to read the text about "Environmental Problems". Will you read it?

Environmental Problems

Young people today are more aware of the environment than ever before. This is the first really "green" generation. Mark Farrell asked Claudia, 19, from London about her opinion on this problem.
There are lots of environmental problems – the greenhouse effect, acid rain, the hole in the ozone layer, and so on. There's also air pollution causing asthma. And there’s a nuclear waste and other kind of toxic waste.
But my problem is that I don't feel I can do anything about it myself. It's all so big and of control.
How can you have clear opinions about all these scientific things?
You would have to be an expert on nuclear energy, on the weather, on chemistry, on everything. And another thing... only the politicians are in a position to do anything about it, and they don't seem to care that much. It's not worth voting for the Green Party, because they're so small. And the other parties don't want to do anything serious because it would be unpopular. I suppose in the end things will get so bad that they'll just have to do something. Teacher: I'd like you to work on this text.

c. She is not a member of the Green Party.

3) Who is in the position to do anything about environmental problems?

V. Монологическая речь

I'd like you to sum up all the information about the environmental problems using the Conditionals.

  1. If people thought about the Earth before they throw something away, …
  2. If people took as much rubbish as they could to local recycling centers, …
  3. If people avoided buying packaged goods, …
