A TRUE FRIEND?

Leaving my revision (повторение) until the last minute had never been my plan as I'd always done well at school. But last winter term (четверть, семестр) it all went wrong. Before I knew it, there were just a few weeks until the exams. I tried to revise (повторять) one subject a night. Mum and Dad didn't help and made me feel guilty (виноват) for going to my friend Emma's for a break. Emma was my only real friend. I'm quite shy and she was always doing my talking for me. She often asked me to help with homework in return (в обмен) , but I didn't mind because I found school work easy. One day, I spoke to Jamie, a boy from my history class. He had the history exam paper and would give it to me for 25 pounds. When I looked at it I realized I already knew most of the answers! I felt really silly and ashamed but relieved (успокаиваться) to know I wasn't as bad at history as I thought. That Friday, after school, I went to Emma's and told her everything.

A few days later Emma asked for my French revision notes and threatened (угрожать) to tell everybody that I had cheated (списывать). Soon her demands (угрозы) increased (возрастать) . She asked to 'borrow' (взять взаймы) some of my favourite CDs, but it was clear she was going to keep them. Then she made me buy her lunch or pay her bus fares (оплата за проезд). I didn't want to but she said she could ruin (разрушить) my whole future. I can't believe I put up with it (терпеть ) but I didn't know what else to do.

Then, just before the exams were about to start, my worst nightmare (кошмар) came true (сбываться). One morning at school I was called into the headmaster's office. I'd been found out (разоблачать). My parents were there too and they were upset. When we got home, I explained everything – how I'd been worried about the exams and Emma's demands.

Gradually, life improved, I started doing better at school and I made a new friend – a girl called Gina, who introduced me to her group of mates. They like me for who I am and are real friends – unlike Emma.

Now I'm waiting for my real exam results. I don't know how I'll do, but whatever happens, I've learnt my lesson – cheating is bad. You just have to do your best and ask for help if you need it.

1. Read Helen's story and say in 2–3 sentences what it is about.

2. What did Emma demand from Helen?

3. Why did Helen decide to cheat?

4. How did Helen's life change in the end?

6. Работа в группах .

1) Подобрать эквиваленты пословиц:

А man is known by the company he kept.

He is a good friend that speaks well of us behind our back.

False friends are worse than open enemies.

A joke never gains an enemy but often losses a friend.

A friend in need is a friend indeed.

A friend to all is a friend of none.

The friends you choose help you win or loose.

  • Is it possible to have friendships across generations?
  • Do you believe parents should be your friends?
  • Do you think it is possible to have a friend of the opposite sex?
  • How do you maintain a good friendship?
  • What do you do when you have a misunderstanding with your friend?

3) QUESTIONNAIRE “WHAT SORT OF FRIEND ARE YOU?”

Yes No
1. Do you often agree with your friend?
2. Can you keep your friend’s secrets?
3. Do you let yourself laugh at your friend?
4. Do you lend money to your friend?
5. Do you always tell the truth to your friend?
6. Do your friend’s troubles trouble you?
7. Are you always ready to admit your mistake?

7 points – you’re an ideal friend.

6 points – you’re a very good friend.

5 points – you’re a good friend.

less than 5 points – you aren’t a good friend.

7. Задание на дом.

Your home task is to read the texts “A Cup of Tea” and answer the questions.

A CUP OF TEA (K. Mansfield)

Read the extract and answer the questions below the extract.

But at the moment the door-handle turned.

“Rosemary, may I come in?’ It was Philip, Rosemary’ husband.

“Of course”.

He came in. “Oh, I’m sorry”, he said and stopped and stared at the girl.

“It’s quite all right”, said Rosemary, smiling. “This is my friend, Miss..”

“Smith,” madam”, said the girl, who was strangely calm and unafraid.

“Smith”, said Rosemary. “We are going to have a little talk”.

“Oh, yes,” said Philip and smiled his charming smile. “As a matter of fact,” said he, I wanted you to come into the library for a moment. Would you? Will Miss Smith excuse us?"

The girl raised her big eyes to him, but Rosemary answered for her.: “Of course, she will.” And they went out of the room together.

“I say”, said Philip, when they were alone. “Explain. Who is she? What does it all mean?”

Rosemary, laughing, said:

“I picked her up in Cursor street. Really. She asked me for the price of a cup of tea, and I liked her so much that decided to bring her home with me.”

“But what on earth are you going to do with her?” cried Philip.

“Be nice to her”, said Rosemary quickly. “Be frightfully nice to her. Look after her. I don’t know how. We haven’t talked yet. But show her – treat her – make her feel –“

“My darling girl,” said Philip, “you’re quite mad, you know. It simply can’t be done.”

“I knew you’d say that”, retorted Rosemary. “Why not? I want to make friends with her. Isn’t that a reason? And besides, one’s always reading about these things. I decided…”

“But”, said Philip slowly, and he cut the end of his cigar, “she’s astonishingly pretty.”

“Pretty?” Rosemary was so surprised that she blushed. “Do you think so? I – I hadn’t thought about it.”

“Good Lord!” Philip struck a match. She’s absolutely lovely! …. Let me know if Miss Smith is going to dine with us…”
