Let’s read the text very attentively. Try to get as much information as possible. You have 5 minutes. (учащиеся читают про себя текст)

A. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has four historic parts: England with its capital in London, Scotland with its capital in Edinburg, Wales with its capital in Cardiff and Northern Ireland with its capital in Belfast. The floral symbol of England is the Red Rose. Earlier, it decorated the arms of the House of Lancaster. The Lancastrians argued for the throne of England with the Yorkists whose arms had a white rose. The war for the throne between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists became known in the history of the country as the war of the Red and White Rose. It lasted 30 years (1455-1485). When the Lancastrians won the war, their arms of the Red Rose became the symbol of the whole England.

B. The Scottish symbol is a wild plant called the Thistle. At one point, the Scandinavians planned to attack a Scottish village. But since the Scots knew they were coming, they started to prepare for war.

Late at night, the Scandinavians came in their bare feet so as to not awaken the Scottish warriors in the village. But the thorns of the thistle hurt their bare feet. Their howls of pain pierced the silence and the Scots awoke to fight the enemy.

C. The Welsh symbol is a vegetable called the Leek (or, on occasion, the flower, the daffodil). The patron saint of Wales, David, ate only leeks and bread. In memory of this Christian saint, the leek became the symbol of Wales. Daffodils which burst into flames by the 1st of March celebrate the revered Welsh saint.

D. The Irish symbol is another wild plant called the Shamrock. This plant helped St Patrick explain to the people of his country what the Holy Trinity is. The historic colors of the parts are: England, White, Scotland, Blue, Wales, Red, Northern Ireland, Green. Sport teams of the nations wear these colors.

5. Развитие навыков монологической речи

(Учащиеся рассказывают различные версии легенд о символах Англии, Шотландии, Уэльс, Ирландии. Приложение 6).

T: Which legend about a floral symbol is the most poetic? Why do you think so? Tell this legend to your partner.

P1: The thistle.

For many centuries the purple thistle has been Scotland’s national symbol. There is a legend that explains why it became the Scottish emblem. According to that legend, ancient Scandinavians (the Norsemen) wanted to plunder the land of Scotland and settle there. So, they landed on the east coast of Scotland.

The Scots gathered their army to defend the land. They assembled behind the river Tay and made a camp to have rest after a long march. The Scots were sleeping and did not expect the enemies.

The Norsemen took their shoes off not to make noise. But one of the Norsemen stepped on a thistle. That sharp pain made him scream. So the Scots heard this cry and put the Norsemen to fight

P2: The shamrock

The Shamrock symbolizes the Holy Trinity. Before the Christian era, it was a sacred plant of the Druids of Ireland because its leaves formed a triad. "Three" was a mystical and sacred number to the Druids and the ancient Irish (Celtic) religion. It may have represented totality: past, present, and future; behind, before, and here; sky, earth, and underworld.

According to the legend, St. Patrick, preaching in the open air on the doctrine of the Trinity, is said to have illustrated the existence of the "Three-In-One" by plucking a shamrock from the grass growing at his feet and showing it to his congregation. The simple beauty of this explanation convinced his congregation, who had been skeptical, and from that day the shamrock has been revered throughout Ireland.

The legend of the shamrock is also connected with that of the banishment of the serpent tribe from Ireland by a tradition that snakes are never seen on trefoil and that it is a remedy against the stings of snakes and scorpions.

P3: The Red Rose.

The Red Rose is the symbol of England. It comes from the history of the country.

This symbol goes back to the War of the Roses, which was the war within the country. In the 15th century two Houses were struggling for the English throne – the Lancastrians and the Yorkists.

Red rose was the emblem of the Lancastrians and the white rose was that of the Yorkists. Their rival ended when King Henry VII, the Lancastrian, married Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of the Yorkists. Since that time the red rose

P4: The Yellow daffodil.

Wales has got two national symbols. These are the daffodil and the leek. They are both connected to the Patron Saint of Wales.

According to the legend during a battle against the Saxons, St. David advised his soldiers to wear leeks in their enemies.

The daffodil is also associated with St. David’s Day, due to the fact that it breaks into the blossom on that day. Interesting to note that one of the many Welsh names for a daffodil is «Cenhinen Bedr» which means «Peter’s leek».
